True. The Freeblades were mostly bandits and ruffians to begin with. But I merely gave them guidance. It was their strong will that carried them to greatness.		Eyvel
Alfonse	Why their will in particular, and not some other ability?
The Freeblades didn't take up arms for lofty ideals, and they certainly didn't do it because they were told. They did it because they were hungry and oppressed. Because they, and their families, were on the brink. Nothing hones a blade to a sharper edge than desperation. The fear of losing what matters most to you. In that sense, we had a massive advantage over our enemy. The church was too comfortable to match our strength of will.		Eyvel

Did it make you uneasy at all to lead the Freeblades into battle without your memory? I imagine it must be unnerving, to wield a blade without being certain of who you are.		Alfonse
Eyvel	Yes and no. It is true that, for a long time, I felt an emptiness in my heart. In those early days, I had no one to rely on. I knew neither who I was, nor how I came to be.

Eyvel	Because of all that, however... Fiana quickly became everything to me. All I knew, all I ever cared about was in that village. People like Lord Leif, Lady Nanna, Mareeta... I began to care for them as deeply as if they were my children. Before I knew it, protecting them became my whole reason for living.

Eyvel	That is how I feel, even to this day. Only now, I count the people of Askr among my charges as well. It's a waste to look back at the emptiness of my past when my future is so full of life.

You said yourself that you gave them guidance. Surely you must see how you contributed to their growth. Your ability to press on, even with no memory... It must have been an inspiration to them.		Alfonse

I do believe that memories of the past are essential to understanding oneself as a person. At the same time, there is no use dwelling on them, because the past cannot be altered. The future, on the other hand... That is worth all our efforts.		Alfonse

As royalty, it is incumbent upon me to provide my subjects with a bright and hopeful future. I want to be more mindful of that.		Alfonse
