- Gift for Magic is affected by skills that "calculate damage using the lower of foe's Def or Res", as well as skills that disable such effect.
- Exceptions include skills that grant or disable this effect only "during combat", such as Inf. Hexblade 3 and Light and Dark II.
- Damage dealt "before combat", such as from Gift for Magic, is affected by Bonuses, Penalties, Dominance, and Treachery.
- Damage dealt "before combat", such as from Gift for Magic, is not affected by "during combat" effects such as Bonus Doubler, Foe Penalty Doubler, Cross Spur Atk, or weapon-triangle advantages.
- Skills such as Queensblade, Sentinel Bow, or Breezy Spear can prevent Gift for Magic from triggering.
- Gift for Magic is affected by skills that "calculate damage using the lower of foe's Def or Res", as well as skills that disable such effect.
- Gift for Magic inflicts out of combat damage.
- Out of combat damage cannot reduce a unit's HP to 0.
- A foe equipped with Embla's Ward, Múspellflame, Niðavellir Axiom, Gold Perfection, or Nine-Realm Pact will neutralize all sources of out of combat damage except from Røkkr area-of-effect Specials.

- Gift for Magic only neutralizes effects that change the priority, or order of attacks, such as Desperation, Vantage, and Paranoia.
- Effects such as Guaranteed Follow-Ups and Quick Riposte 4, which do not change the order, but rather guarantee that an attack will occur in whatever order is natural, are not affected.
- Gift for Magic will reduce the effect of non-Special "reduces damage by X%" effects from Specials such as Vital Astra.
- Damage-reduction reducing effects stack multiplicatively, unlike interactions related to the weapon-triangle, such as Triangle Adept and the weapon-triangle advantage boost.
- For example, if a unit has Halves non-Special damage reduction and a foe with Dodge is on a space with 【Divine Vein (Water)】, the maximum total damage-reduction is reduced to 10%, since the two effects reduce the damage to (1 − ((40% − 50%) − 50%)) = 90% of the original damage instead of 60% of the original damage.
- Each damage-reduction effect is reduced individually.
- For example, if a unit has Halves non-Special damage reduction and the foe has both Spurn 4 and Dodge, the maximum total damage-reduction is reduced to 40%, since the two effects reduce the damage to (1 − (50% − 50%)) × (1 − (40% − 50%)) = 60% of the original damage instead of 30% of the original damage.
- Gift for Magic will not reduce the effect of Special "reduces damage by X%" effects such as Gust or Laguz Friend 4.

- The damage-reduction effect is calculated after offensive Specials and damage boosting effects such as Arcane Lúin and Dominance.
- If a skill such as Miracle or Everliving Domain can trigger, the damage-reduction effect will not trigger and the user will still survive with only 1 HP.
- "Reduces damage by X%" effects stack multiplicatively, unlike interactions related to the weapon-triangle, such as Triangle Adept and the weapon-triangle advantage boost.
- Special "reduces damage by X%" effects cannot be neutralized or reduced by effects such as Share Spoils or Halves non-Special damage reduction.
